Full Description

A digger driver with Anglian Water found an Anglo-Saxon warrior burial on a pipeline on Bloxholm Lane in Bracebridge Heath. There was a spearhead, long sword with pommel, shield and a damaged hanging bowl. No bones were reported. {1} The four objects form a coherent group, and a probably from a high status 7th century burial, paralleled elsewhere in Lincolnshire. The sword is iron, with a copper alloy pommel. It was made using an elaborate technique, called pattern-welding, the results of which were admired for their beauty as well as their strength. It may also have had a wooden guard. The spearhead has a flat cross-section and the shape of a broad-based leaf. It has a socket with a wide split. The shield boss is shaped like half a rugby ball. It possibly had a projection at the apex which has broken off. Only the upper parts of the hanging bowl survive. Although it is similar in many ways to others in Lincolnshire, it also has similarities to one found at Sutton Hoo, which indicates that it may be of high status. {2}{3}
