Full Description
A FINELY MADE AND ELABORATE MORTAR AND PESTLE. THE LARGE BOVID TERMINAL OF THE MORTAR HAS CLEARLY DEPICTED HORNS, UPTURNED EARS, DEWLAPS, DEEP-SOCKETED ROUND EYES, AND A BROAD, FLARED, BLUNT-ENDED MUZZLE WITH SLIGHTLY PARTED LIPS. THE SUSPENSION LOOP HAS A BILL-LIKE EXTENSION AND WAS PROBABLY INTENDED AS A STYLISED DUCK-HEAD, A SMALL PROJECTING KNOB PERHAPS REPRESENTING SOME FORM OF CREST OR PLUMAGE. ON THE BOW IS A SINGLE OF SMALL PUNCHED DOTS WITHIN AN ENGRAVED LINE WHICH RUNS FROM EACH TERMINAL, OBLIQUELY, TO CONVERGE ON A NEATLY MOULDED STUD AT THE CENTRE OF THE CONVEX UNDERSIDE OF THE BOW. THIS MAY WELL HAVE BEEN HELD TO STEADY THE MORTAR WHEN IN USE. THE PESTLE, WITH A
SIMPLE CIRCULAR SUSPENSION LOOP, IS A SLENDER CRESCENTIC ROD OF KNIFE-LIKE FORM. BEYOND THE LOOP, ITS STEM SWELLS THEN RISES SHARPLY AND TAPERS TO A NARROW POINTED TIP. WITHDRAWN FROM CHRISTIES FINE ANTIQUITIES SALE IN 1977, AND THEIR PRESENT WHEREABOUTS ARE UNKNOWN. {1}
