Full Description
PRN 70158
During a watching brief at 320 High Street a sequence of floor layers and features were observed dating from the medieval to the post medieval periods. A limestone and lime-mortar oven base was found. The finds removed were laid on the oven base and suggest its destruction rather than its use. The pottery suggests destruction between the mid 15th century and mid 16th century. A small pit was observed which contained many fragments of York stone roofing tile. A single pottery sherd suggests a date between late 11th century and the early 13th century. Further pits were recorded, one with one sherd of 13th century pottery, and the other contained one sherd of 11th century or 12th century pottery. This pit may have been another oven. Additionally there was a tiled hearth base in the north-west corner of the trench floor and fine ash rake-out material. The lowest context contained a 12th century to 13th century pottery sherd. {1}{2}
