Full Description

PRN 70157 During a watching brief at 320 High Street a sequence of floor layers and features were observed dating from the medieval to the post medieval periods. The first deposits encountered consisted of one or more destruction layers containing 60% brick/tile and limestone rubble. There were worked stone fragments including part of a window mullion, a stone finial, and a fragmentary stone chimney. Pottery of 18th century date was also recovered. Below this a limestone and lime-mortar oven base was found, constructed in the medieval period and possibly in use into the early post medieval period. The finds removed were laid on the oven base and suggest its destruction rather than its use. The pottery here suggests destruction between mid 15th century and mid 16th century. There was also a small pit cut into a floor layer which contained mid 16th century to mid 17th century pottery. It was partly sealed by a limestone slab, which may have been a repair to the floor over the pit. {1}{2}
