Full Description

THE SITE OF ROMAN EASTGATE HAS BEEN KNOWN FOR MANY YEARS TO LIE IN FRONT OF THE EASTGATE HOTEL. EXCAVATIONS 5 YEARS AGO BY PETCH REVEALED THE BACK OF THE NORTH GATE TOWER AND IN JANUARY 1964, DURING THE BUILDING OF A NEW WING TO THE HOTEL, EXCAVATION BY THE MUSEUMS REVEALED PRACTICALLY THE WHOLE TOWER IN THE CAR PARK BESIDES THE PAVEMENT. IT IS RECTANGULAR WITH ROUND OUTER FACE AND STANDS 5-6FT HIGH, INCLUDING ITS PLINTH. THE BASE IS BUILT OF LARGE DRESSED STONES AND THE REBATE FOR THE GATE AND SLOT FOR BAR SURVIVE. THE GATEWAY PROBABLY HAD A DUAL CARRIAGEWAY AND CART RUTS ARE VISIBLE NEAR THE GATE REBATE. THERE IS SOME INDICATION OF A LATER BLOCKING OF THE CARRIAGE-WAY AND AN INSERTED OVEN WITHIN THE TOWER. {1}, AREA 0.14H, LENGTH 56M, WIDTH 25M
