Full Description
ROBEY'S ENGINEERING WORKS WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1850 BY ROBERT ROBEY. IT PRODUCED AGRICULTURAL IMPLEMENTS AND TRACTION ENGINES AS WELL AS BOILERS. IN THE LATE C19 IT PORDUCED MINING EQUIPMENT (PIT HEAD WHEELS. TOWER ENGINES AND ELECTRICITY DYNAMOS AND GENERATING EQUIPMENT) THE FIRM DECLINED FROM THE 1950'S TO 1980'S. MOST OF THE VERY EXTENSIVE SITE ON CANWICK ROAD HAS BEEN CLEARED, BUT SOME BUILDINGS REMAIN, MOSTLY OCCUPIED BY JACKSON SHIPLEY AS BUILDERS MERCHANTS/ DIY BUSINESS. SURVIVING BUILDINGS ARE ON SOUTHERN AND WESTERN EDGES OF THE SITE. THE OFFICES HAVE THEIR ORIGINAL MAIN ENTRANCE. THE FACTORY BLOCK REMAINS. {1}
