Full Description

PRN 70111 A WATCHING BRIEF ON LAND TO THE REAR OF WALNUT HOUSE, LILLY'S ROAD RECORDED STONE BUILDING FOUNDATIONS CONTAINING SECOND CENTURY POTTERY WITHIN THE STONEWORK, WITH ASSOCIATED FLOORS WITH FINDS OF THE THIRD AND FOURTH CENTURIES. THE BUILDING WAS AT LEAST THIRTEEN METRES LONG BUT EXTENDED BEYOND THE EXCAVATED AREA. THERE WAS IN ADDITION A PIT OF ROMAN DATE. POTTERY, INCLUDING SOME SAMIAN, BONE AND A BRONZE BROOCH WERE RECOVERED. IN A SECOND AREA PART OF THE SKELETON OF A SMALL ROMAN LAPDOG WERE FOUND TOGETHER WITH THE REMAINS OF A WALL AND A FLOOR SEALING THIRD AND FOURTH CENTURY POTTERY. ONE THIRD CENTURY COIN WAS FOUND. HUMAN REMAINS WERE ALSO FOUND REDEPOSITED AND IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THESE CAME FROM ROMAN BURIALS DISTURBED DURING THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD (SEE 70024 FOR THE NORTHERN ROMAN CEMETERY). THE PRESENCE OF A ROMAN STRIP BUILDING SO FAR EAST OF THE PRESUMED LINE OF ERMINE STREET SUGGESTS THE EXISTENCE OF A PARALLEL BLOCK STREET AND INDICATES MORE EXTENSIVE ROMAN OCCUPATION NORTH OF THE NEWPORT ARCH THAN HITHERTO SUSPECTED. {1}{2}
