Full Description
THE BUILDING IS SITUATED TO THE SOUTH OF THE CATHEDRAL ON THE SLOPE OF STEEP HILL AT THE CORNER OF STEEP HILL AND CHRIST'S HOSPITAL TERRACE. THE ORIGINAL BUILDING PROBABLY DATES FROM THE LATE C12. INCORRECTLY ASCRIBED TO AARON THE JEW, A FAMOUS JEWISH FINANCIER IN THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD, THE BUILDING PROBABLY WAS BUILT AND OWNED BY JOCEUS OF YORK, ANOTHER JEWISH BUSINESS MAN WHO IS MENTIONED IN THE HUNDRED ROLLS AND PROBABLY DIED IN THE MASSACRE AT YORK IN 1190. OWNERSHIP CAN BE TRACED UP UNTIL ABOUT 1300. AFTER THIS TIME IT IS NOT CLEAR. THE MAJORITY OF THE BUILDING APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN SUBJECTED TO CONSERVATION WORKS IN THE C19. IT IS NOT CLEAR WHETHER THE PROPERTY WAS DIVIDED AT CELLAR LEVEL. IT WAS CERTAINLY DIVIDED AT GROUND LEVEL EARLY ON IN THE BUILDING'S HISTORY. THE STAIRWAY MAY HAVE BEEN REPAIRED OR BUILT IN THE VICTORIAN PERIOD. THERE MAY BE A SECOND CELLAR TO THE EAST OF THE EXISTING ONE. THERE ARE SLOTS ON THE GROUND FLOOR LYING AT THE BASE OF THE EAST WALL TO THE EAST OF THE VAULT. THERE ARE SEVERAL IDEAS AS TO THE REASON FOR THE SLOTS: 1) THEY REPRESENT AN EARLIER FORM OF THE BUILDING PRIOR TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE VAULT. 2) THEY RELATE TO THE BACK OF THE BUILDING RATHER THAN THE FRONT. 3) THEY REPRESENT PART OF A HEATING SYSTEM. 4) THEY REPRESENT PART OF A VENTILATION SYSTEM. {1}
For full description of exterior and interior features, see Listing description. {6}
A WATCHING BRIEF WAS CARRIED OUT DURING THE INSTALLATION OF A WC AND HAND- BASIN IN NO 47. THE RESULTS OF THE WATCHING BRIEF HAVE SERVED TO ILLUSTRATE THE NATURE OF THE FOUNDATIONS FOR THE PRESENT STRUCTURE, AND HAVE INDICATED THAT THE EXISTING WINDOW ARRANGEMENT PROBABLY REPRESENTS A LATER ADDITION TO THE ORIGINAL STRUCTURE. {2}{3}
A watching brief was carried out during the installation of a new floor in the 1st floor wine tasting room in no. 47. No new information about the original building was discovered, however a date of 1869 was obtained for the partial renovation of the floor. Alterations to the east wall, probably carried out in the early 20th century, were also noted. {4}{5}
