Full Description

Excavations in Cottesford Place located an elaborate building furnished with a massive heating system and with tessellated pavements. The large scale of the flues and stoke holes serving the system suggested that the building was probably a public bath building. {1}{2}{3} During the Bailgate watermains replacement works, south of Newport Arch, two sections of possible wall were revealed. One was a large piece of dressed limestone, the other consisted of roughly squared blocks and two limestone slabs. Finds recovered from these features included grey ware and painted plaster. These appear to be the remains of a structure fronting onto the east side of Ermine Street. The Roman public baths are known to have been situated here and the walls could be associated with this building. {4}
