Full Description

The site of Queen Eleanor's cross, south of the Bargate, is now a main road junction. Queen Eleanor died at Harby in 1290. The first of the Eleanor crosses marking the stages of her funeral cortege was erected outside Bargate. By 1595 it had gone. Within the passage of Lincoln Castle gateway is a small piece of a sculptured female figure which is all that is left of the Eleanor cross. {1}{2} The cross was described as "a very fair crosse and large" by Leland in 1538. By 1624 it was evidently in disrepair and was restored. It was finally destroyed by Order of the Common Council of Lincoln in 1643 during the Civil War. {3}
