Full Description

Not far from the site of two substantial Roman buildings (possibly part of a small farmstead?), further Roman discoveries were made as part of the work on the Lincoln by-pass in 1984. The ground was water-logged at this point and three well preserved timber coffins were found by the JCB driver. Unfortunately, two were almost completely destroyed but the third remained intact and was removed from the site. All that remained of the body inside were three teeth from the upper left jaw. Identified as probably belonging to an adult 30-40 years old. Subsequent cleaning of the coffin revealed the impression of a skeleton on its base. {1} Now thought to have been only two wooden coffins; verbal reports of a stone coffin from the site, but impossible to verify this. Location of site indicated. {2}
