Full Description
Remains of a Roman villa at Greetwell Fields in Lincoln, now a built-up area, first discovered in 1883. Finds continued to be found until 1894 when ironstone quarrying of the site ceased. Housing was built on the site during the First World War, in the 1920s and 1940s, producing further finds and in-situ remains. The evidence indicates a building of at least two phases, possibly of courtyard or winged plan. Long corridors form three sides of a possibly rectangular building, with rooms leading off internally; nearly all with mosaic floors and traces of painted wall plaster. A bath suite was found at the south-west corner of the complex, linked to the east-west corridor. Traces of hypocaust were found, also flue tiles, roof tiles, drains, and a water pipeline. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}{8}{9}{10}{11}{12}
Roman villa excavated just outside of Lincoln. Wall plaster survives showing petalled flowers and fragments of lettering. Similar painted blossoms found in Holland at Plasmolen, Kloosterberg. {13}
An important late Roman villa located in a magnificent position on the hilltop, looking south across the Witham Gap. It was possibly not a conventional countryside villa but, given the palatial scale and quality of the mosaics and the plan form, it may have been the 'official residence' of a senior figure, possibly the Roman governor of the province of Britannia Secunda. {14}
