Full Description

St Anne's Bedehouses, for Richard Waldo Sibthorp, 1847, probably not completed until the 1860s. Sibthorp went to A.W.N.Pugin and the building is a faithful reflection of Pugin's design - medievalizing and informal. It has a loose plan, like a P open at the back of the head. All single storey, overhanging eaves, red brick, hard stone details with a well head in the centre of the court. {1} St Anne's Bedhouses, designed by A.W.N.Pugin. Fourteen houses paid for by the Revd Richard Waldo Sibthorp in 1847 (though the building was not completed until the 1860s). Built by George Myers. Intended as residences for 14 females of limited resources who were committed members of the Church of England. Each woman received two rooms, a convenient scullery and a backyard. In 1905 the allowance was 5s.6d. per week, with three doles of 7s. each, 10s. in clothes, 2.5 tons of coal per year and a new cloak evey fifth year. The houses are brick with blue clay Staffordshire tiles roofs with crocheted ridge tiles. {2}
