Full Description
60941
The earliest evidence for the existence of a settlement at Timberland are four entries in the Domesday Book. These represent sokeland and berewics, one of which was a berewic of a manor at Waddington. The minimum population at this time was 33. The name Timberland means 'the grove where timber is obtained' from the Old English 'timber' and Old Norse 'lundr'. {1}{2}
There were 38 households in Timberland in 1563, probably including the settlement of Martin. {3}
There were about 90 families in the parish of Timberland in the early seventeenth century. {4}
The population in 1801 was 358, which, by 1901, had risen to 447. {5}
Medieval earthwork ridge and furrow has been noted in the field between the school and the vicarage (TF1216 5851), with a tarmacked path across it (formerly PRN60942 - now deleted). {6}
During a watching brief at Bayfield Farm (TF 1196 5817) thirteenth century to eighteenth century pottery was recovered from the topsoil. The assemblage comprises Toynton All Saints ware, Lincoln ware and Midlands Yellow. Animal bone and tile was also recovered. An undated ditch and two gullies were also identified, which may be medieval (62320). It appears that this area had an agricultural function in the medieval period. {7}{8}{9}
A earthwork survey was undertaken at TF 1216 5851 (see also source 6) remains of east to west aligned ridge and furrow was identified in the south-eastern part of the site. The remains of ridge and furrow were noted from aerial photographs. {10}
