Full Description

There may once have been a moot in this area. Spellow Lane features on the enclosure award plan as a short length of the road that is now Moor Lane. The name 'Spellow' means 'Moot Hill' or 'Moot Ridge' and tehre are two sites which are more likely than the rest. One is the actual ridge projecting from the 50' contour which runs from north of Deepdales Farm, south-east across Moor Lane, and is very striking when coming from the fen. The other, because it appears as an old enclosure on the enclosure plan is the two closes to the west of Deepdale Farm - these are shown on the enclosure plan as having access up a track that runs from south-east and south of the road through the little piece of triangular woodland. Since Spellow Lane is to the east of the farm, it may be that the moot site was immediately west of the farm. {1}
