Full Description

60862 The first mention of St Catherine's grange comes only in 1280, but it seems very likely that the grant was made in the previous century, and was acquired as a single block from the Bishop of Lincoln. The grange was originally a manor with feudal tenants before it became a grange. A manorial farmstead in Lincolnshire would normally be located within a village. Moreover the 1851 and 1871 census enumerators recorded St Catherine's grange as the name of a farmstead within Canwick village, later known as Village Farm. There is further documentary evidence to suggest that the grange was located on this site. Furthermore an aisled tithe barn was also located in this area, which was taken down in about 1850. The approximate extent of the land which was farmed by the grange can be estimated by later records of land ownership. {1}{2}{3}
