Full Description
ROMANO-BRITISH POTTERY OF THIRD AND FOURTH CENTURY SCATTERED OVER A WIDE AREA. NO BUILDINGS WERE FOUND. NOTES MADE DURING A HOUSING DEVELOPMENT 1947. THE POTTERY IS IN CCM. THE POTTERY WAS FOUND AT THREE MAIN CENTRES: SK 9454 6567, SK 9452 6560, SK 9455 6555. {1}{2}{3}
MUCH POTTERY FOUND AT A DEPTH OF BETWEEN THREE AND FOUR FEET IN THE GARDEN OF 23 RUSSELL AVENUE BY KELVIN GRAHAM. FRAGMENTS OF KILN FURNITURE MAY INDICATE A KILN NEARBY ALTHOUGH NO WASTERS WERE SEEN. POTTERY INCLUDED SAMIAN, COLOUR-COATED AND AN AMPHORA HANDLE. CENTRED AT SK 9444 6559 FOR THE BACK GARDEN OF NO 23. {4}{5}{6}
DURING A WATCHING BRIEF AT RUSSELL AVENUE PART OF A ROMAN SETTLEMENT WAS CUT THROUGH. FROM THE POTTERY THE SITE WAS OCCUPIED DURING THE SECOND TO LATE THIRD CENTURY ALTHOUGH SOME FIRST CENTURY POTTERY WAS FOUND. THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE TO INDICATE DEFINITIVE OCCUPATION IN THE FOURTH CENTURY. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THIS SITE ONE KILOMETRE SOUTH-EAST OF THE FOSSE WAY IS A SMALL SETTLEMENT ASSOCIATED WITH THAT ROMAN ROAD. A COMPLEX OF LINEAR DITCHES IMPLY A DEGREE OF ORDER AND PLANNING. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE SETTLEMENT WAS OF HIGHER STATUS THAN THAT USUALLY ASSOCIATED WITH PEASANT DOMESTIC OCCUPATION. ROOF TILE, BOX-FLUE TILE, A STONE QUERN, A COMPLETE COLOUR-COATED NEW FOREST BEAKER AND MORTARIA SHERDS WERE RECOVERED. IT WAS FELT THAT THE INTERPRETATION IN 1967 OF A POSSIBLE KILN SITE WAS DOUBTFUL. THE WATCHING BRIEF WAS CENTRED AT SK 9445 6563. {7}{8}
