Full Description
Cropmarks of a probable Neolithic long barrow, to the north of Beck Plantation, South Rauceby. Visible as a rectangular enclosure, defined by a single ditch measuring roughly 45m by 20m. Sits in the centre of a later probable Bronze Age barrow cemetery, and between the arc of two pit alignments, though the relationship between these features is uncertain. Identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}
This long barrow is situated on the valley floor of the River Slea. It is aligned north to south, with its long axis traversing the contours. It is an oblong-shaped enclosure with straight terminals and counded corners, and measures approximately 54m by 26m. The enclosure lies between two large concentric circles, equidistant to the north and south (see MLI84434 and MLI84433 respectively). A third smaller, annular ring lies on its eastern flank (see MLI84435). {7}{8}
More recent analysis of the aerial photography for this area shows this feature as almost rectangular in plan, with rounded corners forming a 'playing card' shape. It is elongated north-north-east by south-south-west and has maximum dimensions measuring 52.5m by 31.5m. The feature is now considered more likely to be a small mortuary enclosure or something associated, rather than a long barrow as it does not conform to the shape of known long barrows in the region. It is also located in a valley bottom, which is unusual for Lincolnshire, where most barrows occur on the slopes above dry valleys. Medieval ridge and furrow appears to have gone over the feature, presumably truncating any earthwork elements. {9}{10}{11}
