Full Description
Archaeological recording was conducted in July 1997, prior to the removal of a section of hedgerow on land to the east of Scopwick. The hedgerow sits upon a field boundary that is believed to pre-date the Parliamentary Enclosure of this area in 1799. It separates two fields that are named on the Enclosure map as Burnett Close and Hoyes Close. The use of the word 'close' would indicate that these fields had been hedged, fenced or walled, and that the term was in established use by 1799 would suggest that the boundary has a pre-Enclosure, possibly medieval origin. {1}
