60744 A BRONZE AGE LOOPED AND SOCKETED AXE WAS FOUND DURING FIELDWALKING IN THE SAME FIELD AS CROPMARK BRONZE BARROWS. NOW IN CCM (NOV 1997). {1}{2} THE ORGANIC REMAINS FORMING A THIN LAYER ON THE SURFACE OF THE INSIDE OF THE AXE WERE EXAMINED WITH THE AIM OF IDENTIFYING THE MATERIAL. THE CONCLUSION OF THE EXAMINATION OF THE MATERIAL WAS THAT IS A WOODY SUBSTANCE, WHICH MAY BE REMAINS OF THE HAFT. THE WOOD WAS BADLY DEGRADED, SO IDENTIFICATION OF THE TYPE OF WOOD WAS NOT POSSIBLE, BUT OAK AND ASH WOULD SEEM TO BE THE MORE LIKELY WOODS BEARING THEIR WORKING PROPERTIES AND TRADITIONAL USES. {3}
