Full Description

PRN 60720 This cross was probably erected 1340 and stands at the south corner of the lane leading to what is locally called Shuttleworth Lane and in the centre of the village. Its total height is about 6ft. The figures are carved on the four sides of the base and represent emblems of the gospels. {1} Remains of a stone cross, standing at the corner of School Lane. The base is square 0.9m across, and is carved in relief on all sides. There are weathered cup marks in places. The figures are probably biblical(?). A ram and bird are identifiable with supporting figures at the corners. There is a large chip out at one corner obliterating the design. The design is somewhat weathered now and difficult to interpret. There is the remains of a reeded shaft. {2} A large square decorated limestone base, 1.0m sq x 0.6m high. Badly weathered and the figures are difficult to discern. Figures also on the corners. There is also a broken chamfered shaft with stepped(?) mouldings at the bottom - 1.3m high x 0.40m x 0.30m. {3} There is a full description in the revised scheduling document 22642 {4} 14th century limestone ashlar village cross base. The carvings on the side panels of the base represent the Symbols of the Evangelists. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {5} The name St Matthew was carved on the cross base with the images. {7}
