Monument record MLI60665 - Undated Hearth, Eagle

Summary

Undated hearth, to the south of Eagle.

Type and Period (1)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

An ovoid area of charcoal and burnt soil was noted during monitoring of works on a water pipeline. The feature measured 0.6m (north to south) by 0.45m (west to east), and was slightly pointed at the south end. No other archaeological features could be located within the stripped area, and the context of this undated feature is unknown. It is assumed that the scoop acted as a small domestic hearth; it is puzzling that no further signs of occupation were visible. It is probable that the hearth is one of a complex of archaeological features which may survive on either side of the stripped easement area, in the near vicinity. {1}{2}
