Full Description
PRN 60664
During trial trenching on the site, a previously documented 19th century industrial complex was recorded. This site is low lying and close to the river, because of this the soil is boggy and won't easily support buildings. Evidence recorded here shows that denser soils were imported into the site to increase the stability of the ground before foundations were laid. A series of foundations and walls from the post medieval period have been recorded here. A large proportion of the Sharpes Seed Mill foundations remain intact, Sharpes Seed Mill/Warehouse was formerly a flour mill and built in about 1850 of English bond red brick. The mill had a slate roof and as late as 1982 still had mainly its original windows, the middle section had five storeys and seven bays. A large pit centrally positioned in the complex contained a fill with a predominately large proportion of reddish-brown wood shavings, this represents waste from the saw mill which was on this site. Artefacts recovered on this site, some from the imported soil, date from the 18-19th century and consist of pottery sherds and animal bones.{2}{3}
