Full Description
PRN 60652
During an evaluation at the Hoplands, Boston Road, an east-west ditch was identified as a possible field or enclosure boundary dating to the thirteenth century from the pottery found. Post Roman utilisation of this area appears to suggest a rural, agricultural use from the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries. {1}{2}
Slightly south of the Hoplands investigations further medieval evidence was recorded. A building that appears to probably have been inhabited at the of time of the conquest was recorded. The building was small and L shaped with posts and a large stone hearth. It was extended, possibly in the 15th century. The extension had a large hearth and a stone flagged floor. Some of the stone used for the building may have been robbed from St Giles church, 180 metres north of the site. This building has previously been interpreted as a monastic grange, although this is now thought to be incorrect. {3}
