Full Description
60578
THE SITE COMPRISED OF EAST-WEST ALIGNED BOUNDARY DITCHES, REPRESENTING EARLY LAND DIVISIONS. THESE WERE REPLACED DURING C13 BY A LARGE MOAT, ADJOINING THE RIVER WITHAM. A RECTANGULAR STRUCTURE WAS BUILT IN THE CENTRE OF THE MOAT CONSISTING OF AN AISLED HALL, GARDEROBE AND A SMALL ROOM. OUTSIDE THE AREA OF THE MOAT A CIRCULAR DOVECOTE WAS IDENTIFIED, SUGGESTING A HIGH STATUS GROUP OF BUILDINGS. THIS HALL APPEARS TO BE THE CENTRE OF A MANORIAL COMPLEX.
DURING THE C15 AND C16 THE MEDIEVAL MANORIAL BUILDINGS WERE ABANDONNED. THIS WAS FOLLOWED IN C17 WHEN THEY WERE REFURBISHED. THE AISLED HALL WAS EXTENDED AND A NEW FLOOR WAS LAID. AT THE SAME TIME THE DOVECOTE FELL INTO DISUSE, AND THE BUILDINGS WERE ABANDONNED AGAIN IN C18 (former PRN 60579). THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY EXTENSIVE ROBBING OF WALLS, AND QUARRY PITS HAVE BEEN FOUND ON THE EAST OF THE SITE AND BEYOND (SEE 60787). {1}{2}
