Full Description

PRN 60526 The medieval church of Aubourn is located near to the hall. The plan is laid out in cement on the ground, with the west tower, south porch and short, two-bay north aisle. What remains is the 13th century chancel, with later additions. It had been partly dismantled in the 19th century in order to build the larger church of St Peter at the Haddington end of the village, but this became too large, and the old church came into use again. {1}{2} During a watching brief on the construction of a path to the church, an area of mortar and limestone was recorded in the vicinity of the former nave, west end and the tower. This was interpreted as a demolition layer. {1}{3} During a watching brief in 1998, lenses of building debris were noted which may relate to either the demolition of the main body of the church or the remodelling of the chancel in 1869.{5}{6} A church and priest are mentioned in the Domesday Book as belonging to a manor which was owned by Robert de Todeni. {7} There is reported to be a medieval cross base in the churchyard. {8} For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {10}
