Full Description

A cross shaft, of possible late seventh century date, with acanthus leaf and spiral band decoration, some 5 feet high, stood in the front garden of a farm at Digby at TF0823454748. The owner stated in 1965 that the stone was purchased by her late husband at a sale in Sleaford in the 1920s. Its original provenance was not known. Scheduled no.65. {1}{2}{3} The cross was transferred to the City and County Museum in 1972, and was descheduled on 12th January 1998. {4}{5}{6} It is suggested that the cross-shaft is not seventh century, but is mid twelfth century, and is one of the late cross-shafts of Lincolnshire which are decorated with Romanesque motifs. {7}
