Full Description

PRN 60391 4 PORTIONS OF A SAXON CROSS WERE FOUND IN THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE CHANCEL WHEN THE CHURCH WAS RESTORED IN 1903-4. THE FRAGMENTS ARE NOW IN THE NORTHEASTERN ANGLE OF THE NAVE. {1} OF THE 4 IMPORTANT PIECES WITH INTERLACE, ONE IS FROM A CONVENTIONAL CROSS SHAFT. THE OTHER 3 COME FROM AN UNUSUAL TYPE OF GRAVE-COVER WITH AN INTEGRAL HEAD- AND FOOT- PIECE, SIMILAR TO THE BETTER PRESERVED ONE AT SHELTON IN NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. {2} There was an Anglo-Saxon predecessor to the medieval church of St Andrew. Repair work in 1902-03 revealed the north east corner of the Saxon nave with quoins of long and short construction, dating to c.950-1100. It was during the rebuilding of the chancel that four carved stones were found in the north wall and were removed for display in the north aisle. These comprise three fragments of a large hogback grave cover. The fourth piece is part of a standing shaft with a four-strand plait of Viking influenced decoration c. 925-950 AD. The style layout and quality of the interlace are so similar to the other three fragments that they are probably from the same workshop and possibly from the same monument. {3} A full description and illustrations of each fragment are given in the 'Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Stone Sculpture'. A consecration cross, located on the east face of a 'long' stone in the north-east nave quoin, is also noted. {4}
