Full Description

Cropmarks of Roman settlement activity to the south-west of Stragglethorpe Grange, comprising the remains of enclosures, boundary ditches and trackways, and a north-south pit alignment. A possible villa site or farmstead lies at the southern end of the group, and is defined by two sides of a double-ditched enclosure, within which two other possible enclosures (visible on three sides) are visible, one of which is double-ditched. The pattern of concentric double-ditched enclosures is comparable to cropmarks associated with known villa sites in Lincolnshire. {1}{2}{3} Sherds of Romano-British grey ware pottery were recovered in the spring of 1978, during field walking in this area. A scatter of limestone fragments measuring around 6-9" in diameter was also noted. {4}
