Full Description

PRN 60360 A possible Romano-British villa site on land immediately south of Sheffield House Farm, Rowston. The site was reported by a local resident, and was identified by a dense pottery scatter found in association with building stone, roof and flue tile. During subsequent fieldwalking, pottery was recovered and foundations recorded in the irregularly surfaced field at TF065560. At TF06805623 a coin of Valentinian I and a whetstone (possibly Roman) were found. {1} {2} Fieldwalking in 1965 resulted in finds of Romano-British pottery, broken flue tile (tegula) and fragmentary building stone, concentrated in a small area centered on TF06755618. {1} {2} In 1977 the fields, on gently sloping upland at about 25m OD, were under crop and could not be fieldwalked. However, the farmer reported continuing finds of pottery and fragments of building stone, but noticed no footings. {1}{2} An iron meat fork, one foot long, 3 inches wide and about 1/2 an inch thick was retrieved from the Sheffield House Roman site, Rowston in 1942. {2} It is possible that this site, in conjunction with the possible site at TF06635657 (PRN 63551) be part of a single, and much larger Romano-British occupation site. {3}
