Full Description
PRN 60353
Part of a tesselated pavement was discovered in Ashby de la Launde in 1831. It was 18' by 6' and consisted of black and white tesserae of different sizes, forming bands of various widthes. Recorded by Trollope in 1872 ' Sleaford, Flaxwell and Aswardhurn'. Philips considered the site was almost certainly immediately south east of the Church of St Hybald.{1}{2}
In 1965 a local farmer reported that since 1939 he had ploughed up considerable quantities of stone here. This has since been cleared. Also turned up was a large jug or pitcher.{2}
The Roman building at Ashby de la Launde lies about 19km south of Lincoln midway between Ermine Street and the Car Dyke. Tesserae are known to have come from a field east of Ashby Hall and the discovery of a mosaic pavement is reported by Trollope.{4}
