Full Description

PRN 60345 The place name Asgarby is derived from the Old Norse personal name Asgeirr with the Old Danish suffix 'by' meaning farmstead. Asgarby is not named in the Domesday Book (it may have been included with Howell) and is first mentioned directly in a document dated 1185. {5} The Lay Subsidy of 1334 lists the wealth of Asgarby (with Boughton) as £4 0s 5d, below average for its wapentake (Aswardhurn). {6} The Diocesan Returns of 1563 record 17 households resident in Asgarby. {7} By the late 17th/early 18th century, there were 12 families living in Asgarby, falling to 8. {8} The population of the village in 1801 was 55 people, rising to 126 in 1881 before falling again to 75 by 1901. {9} Medieval ridge and furrow and possible village remains are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs. {1}{2}{3}{4}
