Full Description

PRN 60334 A geophysical survey and evaluation was carried out to the west of Boilingwells Farm. In Field 3 a circular mound was recorded during the magnetometer survey, visible on the ground as a slight rise on the crest of the hill. A trench was excavated across the northern half of the mound revealing three phases of activity. The earliest phase consisted of three east to west aligned linear mound-like features which may represent either a barrow mound and two contemporary banks (the banks divided by a single ditch) or occupation layers and/or features of unknow date, form and function, or features present within and contemporary with the identifiable barrow phase. The second phase consists of a mound constructed from turves, sealing the first phase of activity, and is thought to represent the mound of a c.40m diameter round barrow. A bank, stratigraphically contemporary with the mound, lay up against it. Beyond the bank a shallow 4m wide ditch was present and a low 2m wide bank skirted the outer edge of this ditch. A third phase of occupation was thought to have occurred in the Roman period.{1}{2}
