Full Description
Field walking, conducted in 1976 over the area of Anwick Fen barrow, led to the recovery of 1,362 artefacts, most of which were found on or around the barrows. The collection consisted of one very abraded pottery sherd; 10 pot-boilers; 2 flint hammerstone fragments; 63 flint cores; 1,180 flint flakes; 79 retouched and 27 possibly retouched pieces; and a flake from a polished stone tool, probably an axe, which appears to be Great Langdale tuff (group VI). The retouched pieces formed two main groups: a Mesolithic group consisting of 14 microliths and related forms; and a later Neolithic/early Bronze Age group consisting of a barbed and tanged arrowhead (see 60315), a stone axe flake, a leaf-shaped arrowhead (see 60315), 5 bifaces, 26 scrapers, 6 borers, 2 knives (see 60315), a fabricator, a chisel (see 60315), 2 shouldered blades, a denticulated flake, and the pottery sherd (see 60315). Much of the assemblage was undiagnostic, and it is suggested that although it may be from any period it could represent later Neolithic - Bronze Age settlement, although some of it may have been ploughed up from barrow deposits. {1}
Four microliths are recorded as being found at TF 133 497 by the Colonisation of Britain Project. {2}
