Full Description

PRN 60303 A mis-cast amphora-shaped copper-alloy strap-end dated by kevin Leahy, of Scunthorpe Museum, to the 4th century. This is of a type originally thought to have been a continental import. This is an un-finished example discarded before completed and therefore was probably made locally. {1} Also recovered was pottery from the second to the fourth century, and also tile and glass, reported in 1950. {2}{6} In 1996 Roman pottery, including grey ware, colour-coated, Samian with tile but no mosaic tesserae seen. Also two fourth century coins. {3} Further finds include a dupondius of Vespasian (69-79), a one piece Colchester-type brooch dating to mid 1st century AD, a circular plate brooch with black inlay, possibly 2nd century AD, much grey ware, some colour-coated and Samian. {4}{5} An Ordnance Survey inspector who visited the site in 1965 reported a scatter of grey, red and coarse ware. {6}
