Full Description

60270 The manor of Cotes is mentioned in documents of the early twelfth century, and was given in the time of King Stephen to Kirkstead Abbey. The monks built a grange which they called Linwood, and this name superseded the earlier one, although Cotes is found from time to time until the seventeenth century. Some of the remains of the grange are incorporated into Linwood Hall, the name having been changed from Linwood Grange perhaps in the eighteenth century. The grange was given over to intensive wool production. {1}{3}{4} It was held by lease, the granges of Lynwood and Cotes with all messuages, cottages etc, fifty acres of arable, sixty acres of pasture, 16 acres of meadow and 24 acres of wood, rented for 106s 8d in 1537. It may have been the centre of the Kirkstead Estates in Martin and Timberland. {6}{7} A possible fragment of moat and fishponds may survive, which may be related to the grange or the settlement of Cotes. {3}{4}
