THE AUGUSTINIAN PRIORY OF SOUTH KYME WAS FOUNDED BEFORE C1170 BY PHILIP DE KYME, PROBABLY FOR 12 CANONS UNDER A PRIOR, AND AFTERWARDS ENLARGED BY SIMON DE KYME AND THE TALBOYS FAMILY. THE PRIORY WAS DISSOLVED IN 1539. THE PRESENT PARISH CHURCH OF ST MARY AND ALL SAINTS', PARTLY REBUILT IN 1805 AND RESTORED IN 1890, FORMED THE WEST END OF THE SOUTH AISLE AND PART OF THE NAVE OF THE PRIORY CHURCH. IT IS CHIEFLY DECORATED, BUT WITH A NORMAN SOUTH DOORWAY. IN ABBEY YARD, NORTH OF THE CHURCH, AND ALSO TO THE WEST OF THE CHURCHYARD ARE EARTHWORKS OF THE PRECINCT MOAT, BUILDING PLATFORMS AND FISHPONDS. {1}{2}{4}{5}{8}
IN 1964 THE SITE OF THE PRIORY WAS PLOUGHED FOR ONLY THE SECOND TIME EVER. MUCH TILE, A LITTLE BROWN AND GREEN GLAZED POTTERY AND QUANTITIES OF STAINED GLASS WERE FOUND, ALSO UNPATTERNED GREEN AND YELLOW GLAZED FLOOR TILES. {3}
SCHEDULED 27/04/1994: SAM 22622. FOR A DETAILED DESCRIPTION SEE THE SCHEDULING DOCUMENT. {8}
DURING WATER MAINS REPLACEMENT IN SOUTH KYME A TRENCH WAS DUG ALONG NORTH LANE. THIS WAS EXTENDED INTO THE SCHEDULED AREA, AND THE REMAINS OF A WALL WERE EXPOSED. ALTHOUGH THE WALL WAS UNDATED, IT IS PROBABLE THAT IT IS ASSOCIATED WITH THE PRIORY COMPLEX. {17}{18}
