Full Description

THIS REPRESENTS THE SCHEDULED PART OF SOUTHORPE DESERTED MEDIEVAL VILLAGE. (SEE ALSO 54080). THE SITE COMPRISES A SERIES OF SUNKEN ROADS AND RECTANGULAR HOUSE PLATFORMS ON WHICH THE MEDIEVAL PEASANT HOUSES STOOD. {1} SITE UNDER GRASS COMPRISES A GOOD SERIES OF HOLLOW WAYS AND RECTANGULARHOUSE PLATFORMS c0.6M HIGH. THE S BOUNDARY OF THE VILLAGE IS DEFINED BY A RAISED BANK. THE SITE IS COVERED IN SHORT GRASS WITH VERY FEW WEEDS AND IS WELL FENCED ON ALL SIDES EXCEPT THE N. THERE ARE SOME WET BOGGY AREASPARTICULARLY ON THE E SIDE, S OF THE FOOTPATH AND IN SOME OF THE SUNKENWAYS ON THE E SIDE. THE LARGE ELONGATED POND SHOWN ON THE MAP IS STILL PRESENT, AS IS THE SHALLOW ONE JUST OUTSIDE THE SCHEDULED AREA ON THE W. TO THE E OF THE SITE ARE THE REMAINS OF A RECTANGULAR MOATED SITE WITH A WELL PRESERVED E SIDE. THE BUILDINGS SHOWN IN THE CENTRE OF THIS ON THE SCHEDULING MAP WERE PULLED DOWN IN THE 1960s. THE FOOTPATH RUNNING DIAGONALLY ACROSS THE SITE IS WELL USED AS AN ANIMAL TRACKWAY. {2} A VERY IMPRESSIVE SITE IN GOOD CONDITION. A SUNKEN WAY RUNS THROUGH THESITE AND HOUSE PLATFORMS CAN CLEARLY BE SEEN ON EITHER SIDE. MANY OTHER LESS DISTINCT FEATURES CAN ALSO BE SEEN. THE MOATED SITE TO THE E OF THE SCHEDULED AREA IS ALSO IN GOOD CONDITION AND IT SHOULD BE CONSIDEREDWHETHER THE SCHEDULED AREA SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO INCLUDE THIS. {3} MOATED PART OF SOUTHORPE DMV WAS LEVELLED AND PLOUGHED IN JULY 1966.FINDS INCLUDED 3 EARLY SHELLY RIMS, MEDIVAL SHELLY RIMS AND MEDIEVAL AND POST- MEDIEVAL POTTERY.{4} FOR A DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND HISTORY SEE EVERSON, TAYLOR AND DUNN, 1991. {6}~, AREA 10H, HTM 15M The scheduling includes the remains of the medieval settlement and associated field system and fishponds of Southorpe. {13}
