Full Description

An enclosure approximately 30 yards square, formed by a deep ditch, 15ft wide and 6-8ft deep, with outer bank on south and east. The interior is very uneven. Traces of an outer enclosure are on the east with a deep ditch on the east side. Site of a former manor house, now used as pasture. {1}{2} Air photos suggest Bleasby is a deserted medieval village. At its centre is a well preserved manorial site comprising homestead and perimeter moats with associated fishponds and contemporary field roads. {3}{4}{5}{6}{7}{8}{9}{10}{11}{12}{13} Included as part of the scheduled area for Bleasby medieval village (see PRN 50530). The moated enclosure is roughly 34m square and the moat is up to 2m deep and is crossed on the northern side by a causeway, thought to be the original access to the island. The moat's southern and eastern arms are retained by an external bank, with an outlet channel running downhill from the south-east corner towards two ponds, both roughly rectangular, on the eastern slope of the stream. The moat's southern arm overlies an earlier hollow way which is still visible to the east and west of the moated site. This indicates that the moated manor was established over earlier settlement remains, probably in the 13th or 14th century. All fences and gates are excluded from the scheduling, although the ground beneath them is included. {14}
