Full Description

The cropmark remains of a Roman fort were identified in 1974, on land above the River Trent, to the west of Marton. The site lies 500ft south of the former Roman road, and there is a slight rise in the ground to form a low crest at the scarp above the water meadows down to the Trent to the west. Aerial photographs of the site show the remains of two ditches, defining the whole of the east side and much of the north and south sides of a rectangular enclosure with the normal rounded corners. If the line of the western ditch (not seen in the photographs) lay on or near the scarp edge, the dimensions of the fort will have been about 310ft by 260ft, an area of 1.8 acres. {1}{2}{3}{4} A magnetometry survey was conducted on parts of the Roman fort in 1996, as part of a private research project. The survey recorded large parts of the ditched enclosure surrounding the Roman fort, with clear gaps for the gateways visible. Survey of the interior of the fort was less conclusive, with no clearly defined internal features discernible. {5} An amendment to the scheduling was made in April 2020, to more accurately draw the protected area around the surviving remains. It was thought possible that the site may have been an auxiliary fort, given its relatively small size. It was likely built to defend and/or control the hinterland along the nearby Roman road and the crossing of the River Trent; the first crossing point of the river south of its outfall into the Humber. {6}
