A SUBSTANTIAL MOATED SITE TO THE NW OF ST OSWALD'S CHURCH, RAND. {1}{2}{3} A MANOR IS FIRST RECORDED IN 1153 WHEN WILLIAM TRUSSEBUT MADE GOOD HIS CLAIMS TO THE DE BURUN LANDS AFTER THE DEATH OF RANULPH, EARL OF CHESTER. BY 1193 THE MANOR HAD COME INTO THE HANDS OF THE BURDET FAMILY AND REMAINED SO UNTIL 1346. LATER TENURE IS LESS WELL DOCUMENTED. THE MOAT IS BROAD AND ABOUT 2M DEEP AND WATER WAS LET IN AT THE SECORNER A LEAT. BREAKS AT THE NW CORNER AND IN THE CENTRE OF THE N SIDE, PRESUMAB CONTROLLED BY WOODEN SLUICES, ALLOWED WATER TO BE RELEASED. ON THE CENTRAL PLATFORM SLIGHT EARTHWORK TRACES INDICATE THE POSITION OF PRINCIPAL BUILDINGS. {4}{5}{6}, HTM 20M
