Full Description

Earthworks of a medieval ridge and furrow field system, to the south of Carisbrooke Farm, Willingham. The remains in the fields closest to Carisbrooke Farm are aligned on a roughly north-west to south-east axis, whilst those in the field furthest away (off Stone Pit Lane) are aligned on a roughly south-west to north-east axis. The change in alignment here would indicate a division in the former open field system here. Identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1} Whilst the remains in the fields closest to Carisbrooke Farm still appear as extant earthworks, those furthest away (in the field to the immediate east of Stone Pit Lane) have been destroyed by 20th century arable cultivation. {2}
