Full Description

PRN 53942 In 1545, following the dissolution of the preceptory, the property was granted to John Cook and John Thurgood. By 1610 it had been sold to the Saundersons (Earls of Scarbrough) who let it to a succession of tenants and finally sold it, as a unit, in 1925. The estate created by the Templars and the Hospitallers has thus survived largely intact to the present day. Some parts of the medieval preceptory are overlain by remains of successive occupation. There are also the remains of clay and coal pits. The farmhouse is excluded from the scheduling, although some of the earthworks are included. {1} A farmhouse built in about 1825 of coursed limestone rubble with irregular ashlar bands and red brick.
