Full Description

An English Civil War defensive site. The site lacks any direct documentation. It is situated on the crest of a steep rise overlooking Kettlethorpe Hall and village. It comprises an almost square enclosure, bounded by a broad rounded bank and wide external ditch on the north, west and part of the south sides, those fronting the falling ground. Along the south end of the east side are the foundations of a two celled building. There is a similar enclosure in South Kelsey. Kettlethorpe Hall was held in the 17th century by the Hall family who were of Parliamentary leaning. In 1644-45 the Torksey area was the scene of skirmishing between Royalist parties from Newark and patrols of Parliamentarians holding the county, with crossing places of the lower Trent amongst the targets. {1}
