Full Description
METAL DETECTING DURING THE 1980'S LED TO THE RECOVERY OF 13 PIECES OF PAGAN SAXON METALWORK. THIS INCLUDED FRAGMENTS OF CRUCIFORM BROOCHES OF ABERG'S GROUPS II, III, IV; SLEEVE CLASPS; A SQAURE-HEADED BROOCH AND SMALL LONG BROOCHES. A DISC BROOCH OF SAXON TYPE WAS ALSO FOUND. NONE OF THIS MATERIAL WAS BURNT, SUGGESTING THAT THE CREMATION RITE WAS ABSENT OR INSIGNIFICANT. ALSO FOUND WAS A ALDFRITH OF NORTHUMBRIA 'SCEAT', YORK C.700. {1}
