STAINFIELD DESERTED MEDIEVAL VILLAGE
Type and Period (2)
- DESERTED SETTLEMENT (Medieval - 1066 AD to 1539 AD)
- RIDGE AND FURROW (Medieval - 1066 AD to 1539 AD)
Protected Status/Designation
Full Description
A SETTLEMENT WAS RECORDED IN DOMESDAY BOOK AND THE LINDSEY SURVEY. NEITHER THE CREATION OF THE MONASTERY NOR THE GREAT HOUSE THAT REPLACED IT, NOR THE DEMISE OF BOTH APPEAR TO HAVE HAD ANY CONSIDERABLE EFFECT ON THE CRUDE LEVEL OF POPULATION OF STAINFIELD. THE VILLAGE REMAINS ARE THOSE OF A PLANNED SETTLEMENT, AND THE PRIORY PROBABLY HAD A ROLE IN ITS RESITING IN C12. THE VILLAGE MUST HAVE BEEN FINALLY CLEARED BY SIR PHILIP TYRWHITT'S EMPARKING AND THE CREATION OF THE FORMAL GARDENS IN THE FIRST DECADE OF THE C17. {1}, HTM 16M
