Full Description

A ROMAN POTTERY KILN WAS EXCAVATED IN 1941 WHEN STRUCTURAL REMAINS, FURNITURE AND THIRD CENTURY COARSE GREY POTTERY WAS FOUND. SINCE THEN MORE POTTERY KILNS HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED, AND ANOTHER WAS EXCAVATED IN 1950. IT IS NOT CLEAR EXACTLY HOW MANY EXIST. A FURTHER KILN SITE WAS EXPLORED IN 1957. {1}{2}{7} ONE OF THE KILNS IS FOURTH CENTURY AND THE PRODUCTS REPRESENT SOME OF THE LATEST ROMAN POTTERY TO BE IDENTIFIED WITH A KILN. {3} SLAG WAS FOUND IN LINWOOD WARREN, CLOSE TO THE SITES OF THE POTTERY KILNS, WHICH RAISES THE QUESTION WHETHER INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES WERE SOMETIMES COMBINED ON THESE SITES. {3}{6}
