Full Description
THE SETTLEMENT REMAINS OF NORTH WILLINGHAM LIE AT THE FOOT OF THE WOLD SCARP. DOCUMENTARY SOURCES SUGGEST THAT THIS HAS BEEN A LARGE VILLAGE, PRINCIPALLY FOR EXAMPLE IN THE ELEVENTH CENTURY AND AGAIN IN THE MID TO LATE SIXTEENTH CENTURY, WITH PERIODS OF DECLINE IN THE LATER MIDDLE AGES AND AGAIN IN THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY AND ESPECIALLY IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY FROM WHICH IT HAS NOT RECOVERED AS A TIGHTLY NUCLEATED SETTLEMENT. EXTENSIVE BUT SLIGHT EARTHWORKS OF HOLLOW WAYS, PROPERTY BOUNDARIES AND HOUSE SITES ARE RECORDED IN APS BUT FORM NO READILY INTELLIGIBLE PATTERN WITHOUT GROUND INVESTIGATION. {1}{2}
During monitoring and recording on land at The Old Blacksmiths [at 53344a] by Neville Hall in May 2012, two sherds of mid 15th to mid 16th century pottery, a sherd of late 15th to mid 16th century pottery and six sherds of 17th to 18th century pottery were found. {3}{4}
