Full Description
THE SETTLEMENT REMAINS, FORMERLY PART OF SIXHILLS VILLAGE RINGING THE SURVIVING SETTLEMENT NUCLEUS ARE RECORDED ON APS AS EARTHWORKS, SOILMARKS AND CROPMARKS. THEY APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN DESTROYED IN THE 1960'S AND FIELDWALKING HAS SUBSEQUENTLY RECOVERED C12 AND LATER USED POTTERY TOGETHER WITH SOME POST MEDIEVAL MATERIAL. C19 ESTATE MAPS SHOW TRUNCATED EAST-WEST STREETS THAT ARE NOW GONE BUT WHEN COMPLETE WOULD NOT ONLY HAVE LINKED COHERENTLY WITH THE SURVIVING ROADS, BUT PRODUCED A REMARKABLY REGULAR GRID OR LADDER PATTERN. DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE SUGGESTS THAT THERE WAS ALREADY A DECLINE IN POPULATION FROM C11 BY THE EARYL C14, WHICH WAS MADE WORSE IN THE LATER C14 WITHOUT COMPLETELY DESTROYING THE SETTLEMENT: THEN A SHARP DECLINE IN THE LATE C16 AND EARLY C17, PROBABLY RESULTING FROM CONVERSION AND ENCLOSURE FOR SHEEP. {1} FIELDWALKING PRODUCED C12 SHELLY WARE.{2} THE NUNNERY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE VILLAGE HAS EVIDENCE OF A C15 TIMBER-FRAMED OPEN HALL, WITH C17 AND LATER REMODELLING. IT ALSO INCORPORATES SOME STONEWORK FROM THE PRIORY. {3}{4}
