Full Description

A Neolithic polished stone axe was found in July 1963, on land at Bleasby Moor. The axe was recovered during work in strawberry beds in this location, and was recorded by staff at Lincoln Museum, though kept by the finder. A second Neolithic polished stone axe was recovered from the same location in 1971. It was donated to Lincoln Museum, where it was thin-sectioned and thought to be of probable Great Langdale tuff. {1}{2}{3} An axe, believed to be the first axe found here in 1963, was shown to HER staff in 2006. No details other than that it had been found in Legsby were available, though it was from the same finder's collection. It was clear that the axe had not been petrologically sampled. The axe was of a light green stone, was polished but unfinished, and had dimensions of about 140mm by 50mm. {4}
